Reclaiming public space for the public is something that comes up as a useful and tactical way to cut infrastructure costs while simultaneously bolstering the development of “social capital” in any city or town. In recent years Paris has done more for its citizens and visitors than any other place to make their public corridor people centric. Is there a street, commercial center, or even neighborhood in your city or town that could benefit from some action to cut down the street or eliminate the use of cars in the area all together? Make biking and being a pedestrian safe? End single-family zoning and encourage mixed use development? Is this an article on Public Square? Nope, it's a big article from a major news organization, Vox. And that is maybe the most exciting part of this. This kind of discussion is fully mainstream. There are loads of things to be concerned about these days, but reforming the way we build cities and towns being at the forefront of our national discussion is certainly something to be excited about.
